February 27, 2013 – Melissa Thodos, performer, choreographer, director, and founder of Thodos Dance Chicago (TDC) will present a reprise of TDC’s 2013 Winter Concert featuring the Chicago premier of “A Light in the Dark”, the story of Helen Keller and Ann Sullivan. Melissa has teamed up with award-winning Ann Reinking to co-choreograph ” A Light in the Dark”, making this their second full length contemporary ballet. This inspirational dance theatre piece that examines what movement means to a person who is unable to see or to hear, has been coined by the Chicago Sun-Times as, “A feast for the senses”. “A Light in the Dark” features an original score by Bruce Wolosoff, as well as new work from renowned California choreographer KT Nelson. TDC will present the 2013 Winter Concert Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.
Later this year, Melissa will join Broadway Theatre Project’s 23rd Season as a guest artist. An honored veteran of the Chicago dance community, Melissa has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants for her work including Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, Ruth Page Award nominations, a Chicago Dance Achievement Award nomination, and an award from the State of Illinois as a Greek American for nurturing and training dancers and choreographers in Chicago. Melissa also serves on the Illinois Arts Council Dance Advisory Panel.
Broadway legend Ann Reinking, is one of the original co-founders of Broadway Theatre Project. Ann’s credits include: Tony Award-winner for Best Choreography for the 1997 Broadway revival of the Bob Fosse musical Chicago, Tony nominee for Best Actress (Goodtime Charley, 1975), Best Featured Actress (Dancin’, 1978) and Best Director (Fosse, 1999). Her work on Chicago has also honored her with the 1996 L.A. Drama Critics’ Award, the 1997 Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics’ Circle Award, as well as the Astaire Award.
The 23rd Season of Broadway Theatre Project will take place July 7- 28, 2013. Melissa joins the ranks of Gregory Hines, Austin Pendleton, Julie Andrews, Joel Grey, Jed Bernstein, and Patti Lupone, among many others as a guest artist at the Project.
Broadway Theatre Project (BTP), a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization celebrating its 23rd anniversary in 2013, is the renowned musical theatre intensive that provides its apprentices with critical training in the disciplines of acting, dancing and singing, taught by a faculty of accomplished educators and performers. As part of its mission, the program strives to engender students with the personal skills necessary to work and survive in the professional world of performing arts. Sessions are held annually every July in Tampa on the campus of the University of South Florida. 2013 Artistic Directors are Debra McWaters and Darren Gibson.
