Sam Houston University Musical Theatre majors brought the house down once again! Saturday January 19th auditions for Broadway Theatre Project’s 2013 Summer Musical Theatre intensive, held in Huntsville, Texas, was filled with incredible talent!
Broadway Theatre Project’s stellar audition panel included: Winner of the The Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition – David Sabella-Mills (Vocal), Uta Hagen Specialist and highly respected Los Angles, New York and Miami director, who has studied with the likes of Charles Nelson Reilly – Marc Durso (Acting), and The Project’s President and Co-Artistic Director, Debra McWaters, who was Associate Choreographer for Broadway’s Chicago the Musical and Fosse (Dance)! The audition was coordinated by the Project’s Executive Director, Sharon Poulos.
34 Performing Arts students filled the sun-drenched dance room to attend a one and a half hour workshop with Debra McWaters. The students were taught the choreography to “All that Jazz” that was used in the actual auditions of the Broadway production of the Tony Award-winning, smash hit Chicago The Musical!
As the day progressed, one by one, each student presented the audition panel with a 16-bar cut of a song and a one-minute monologue. Mr. Sabella-Mills, a Broadway veteran, who seemingly holds an encyclopedia of Musical Theatre knowledge in his back pocket, guided the students in the vocal portion of the audition making suggestions of various songs. Marc Durso, influenced by Uta Hagen method in which he was trained, directed the students as they presented their monologues.
All in all, the day was hugely successful with the talented students receiving a tremendous amount of feedback. Broadway Theatre Project’s audition team left with one major impression – Sam Houston University has done a phenomenal job in training their students!
The 23rd Season of the Summer Musical Theatre Intensive will take place on July 7- 28, 2013. The mission of this intensive three week training program is to further develop the key disciplines of musical theatre, including acting, voice, and dance and the many facets of each, as well as the critical life skills necessary to prepare students to work in the world of professional theatre.
The next set of auditions will be held in New York on Saturday, January 26, 2013, 10:30 am at Simple Studios.
